LOCOMOTIVES
NOTES
Marlboro Unlimted Train

Locomotive PMOX 0001 was an F59PHI made to order at GM's London, Ontario plant as serial number 946543-1. It offered 3200 horsepower and a secondary electrical generator for head end power. The big red diesel took to the rails for the first time in November 1995. Along with locomotive 0002 it sat in waiting at Livingston, Idaho for a call that would never come. The locomotive was sold to Metrolink for commuter service in Los Angeles and repainted at Livingston before proceeding west. It serviced as Metrolink SCAX 882 before being retired in 2020.

Locomotive PMOX 0002 was an F59PHI with much the same story as locomotive 0001. Both rolled out in late 1995. Both were stored in Livingston, ID before moving on to Metrolink. This one was serial number 946543-2. One unique feature of this pair of diesels is that they were modified with the ability to sync the phase of their HEP electrical output before supplying their combined output to the passenger cars of their train. The plan was to run the locomotive's generators in parallel with the power output from power car #3. See below. The locomotive served in commuter service as Metrolink SCAX 883 until retirement in ~2019.

CARS
NOTES
*
Note that there were also 16, 17, 18, and 20-car versions of the train proposed, but the 20-car version dominated until a baggage car was added very late in development. In the cases of cars with two names, the first car name comes from an interior design proposal that included the names, in order, but no associated car numbers. The second name comes from signage that was later designed for some of the cars' interior doors -- which did incorporate car numbers in their design. For example, one interior sign says "The Spa 21". When the proposed train was lengthened from 20 cars to 21 at the last minute by adding a baggage car (to take the #4 spot), it resulted in the car numbers being shifted down the line. The spa car that is almost always referenced as car #20 would, with the addition of the baggage car, have been #21 -- and so on. The train was to be a "cruise ship" on rails - a destination unto itself - but also meaning it needed to be nearly self-contained. The train would have had it all -- everything from a casino to an infirmary, staterooms to dining rooms, dance clubs to hot tubs.
Marlboro Unlimted Train
Power Car #3. May have been former Northern Pacific baggage car #433. To contain 2 diesel-powered electrical generators, each producing 820 kilowatts. It was proposed that the locomotives be modified to run power in parallel with the power car. The power car was partially completed. The height of the car was increased to house the large generators, supply and vent them well, and better match the height of the locomotives. It was not as tall as the domed passenger cars would have been.
Marlboro Unlimted Train
Baggage Car #4. To be leased from Amtrak. This was the car that makes the difference between the 20-car version of the train and the 21-car version. The need for more utility and storage space (related to hotel partners) lengthened the train by one car. There was also a proposal to add an extra sleeping car for hotel executives and managers working with/on the train, but this didn't get as far as the baggage car idea did.

In addition to the rail cars listed above, vans, trucks and buses were needed to transport crew and guests to excursion sites.

Prevost Motor Coaches. Seven luxury sightseeing-style buses were built by Prevost Car in Quebec, Canada to transport guests between train unloading areas and the sites of their various adventures. To be operated by Arrow Stage Lines. Painted to match the train -- red with a white and black stripe below the midline. Model H3-41, each 41 feet long with a capacity of 31 people. One was ADA compliant with a wheelchair lift. Bus numbers were to be painted on top. The first bus was delivered to Denver in December 1995. The other six buses were ready in February 1996 and stored in Sioux City, Iowa. The bus delivered to Denver was to accompany the abbreviated promotional train on its cross-country tour, hence its early delivery. If you know which of the motor coaches was delivered to Denver, or if you have photos of any of the coaches, please email.

PROPOSED
NOTES
*
Marlboro Unlimted Train
Five Auto Carriers. It was proposed that five auto carrier type railcars be procured to save driving some of the Prevost buses and other support vehicles from site to site, especially remote sites on long legs of the itinerary (Cheyenne to Idaho Falls especially). The autoracks were proposed to fit into the train's consist behind the power car to preserve the view from the tail Spa Car -- or to run as a separate train with a dedicated third locomotive.
*
Marlboro Unlimted Train
3rd Locomotive. It was proposed, as the train grew longer, that a third locomotive might be prudent -- either to help pull the whole train or just a separate string of auto-carrier cars.
*
SUPERLINER
11-CAR SUPERLINER VERSION NOTES
*
*
Superliner Version -- At the end of the project in 1997, the possibility of resurrecting the train based on leased Amtrak Superliner cars was explored. The train would have consisted of the two previously leased F59PHI locomotives, a Superliner 1 Storage Car, two Superliner 1 Crew Sleepers, an ADA accessible Superliner 2 Diner, a Superliner 2 Lounge Car, an ADA accessible Superliner 2 Sleeper, three Superliner 2 Deluxe Sleepers, a Superliner 2 Lounge Car and an ADA accessible Superliner 2 Lounge Car -- all heavily modified to PM's high standards for luxury. While it looked great on paper, the will was gone.
