The
1947-1949
Freedom Train
The Freedom
Train was conceived as a means to re-dedicate Americans to the
hard-won blessings of democracy and freedom.
The train would
consist of three exhibit cars filled with dozens of "documents
of freedom"including the Declaration of Independence, the Bill
of Rights, one of the 13 original copies of the Constitution, the
Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, the Iwo Jima
flag, the Japanese surrender documents that ended World War II,
and much more. Attorney General Tom Clark had proposed the idea
to the Truman administration. Financial backing came from the American
Heritage Foundation.
From September
1947 to January 1949, the Freedom Train displayed in hundreds of
cities in all 48 states. Millions of Americans turned out to view
their heritage aboard the Freedom Train.
